Herbert Hernandez (born April 15, 1981) is a Filipino multi-talented artist, songwriter, guitarist, and advertising executive. He is the founder of GIGIL Advertising, an independent creative agency based in the Philippines, and the co-founder of Indierectory, an agency dedicated to creative advertising ideas. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, Hernandez has garnered numerous accolades, including being named in Campaign Asia’s “40 Under 40” and recognized as one of Adweek’s Creative 100 “Most Inspiring Talents of 2021”.
In addition to his advertising career, Herbert Hernandez is a skilled guitarist and musician, best known for his work with popular bands 6cyclemind and Moonstar88. He is also the composer of the hit song “Migraine,” which has become one of the most-streamed tracks in the Philippines, amassing over 100 million plays on Spotify.
Early Life and Education
Hernandez was born in Quezon City, Philippines, on April 15, 1981. From a young age, he displayed a passion for both music and mathematics. At nine years old, he began learning to play the guitar under the guidance of his brother, Darwin Hernandez. His academic excellence shone through during high school, where he represented Rizal in the Math Olympiad and served as the student council president at St. Matthews Academy. His leadership qualities were recognized with prestigious honors such as the Gerry Roxas Leadership Award and the Juan Luna Award for Outstanding Artist of the Batch.
Hernandez’s leadership journey continued during his time at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), where he was elected president of the student council in the College of Fine Arts and Design. In 1999, he co-founded the band Moonstar88, marking the start of his professional music career.
In 2002, Hernandez graduated with honors from UST with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising, receiving accolades such as the UST Rector’s Award and the UST Quezon Leadership Award. In recognition of his achievements, he was also honored with the San Mateo Rizal Youth Achievement Award in 2001.
